Dolly Parton (1946 \u2013 2026)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

“The joke’s on the public. I know exactly what I’m doing and I can change it at any time \u2026 I’m sure of myself. I’m sure of my talent.”<\/em><\/p>\n

I can\u2019t remember a more celebrated singer-songwriter than Dolly Parton on her passing.\u00a0 The BBC 10 o\u2019clock news devoted half its coverage to her\u00a0 on the night, which is unprecedented.\u00a0 And there has been so much broadcast about her since, that there is little left for me to say, other than to add the astrological detail.\u00a0 I guarantee everyone reading this has an earworm of one of her songs, right this minute!\u00a0 She was universally loved, both for her singing, songwriting and philanthropy, and one of the best-selling music artists of all time.<\/p>\n

Birth Chart<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Dolly had the Sun in Capricorn, and the ruling planet Saturn.\u00a0 This is her internal grit and shrewdness; not the outward rhinestone-studded persona.\u00a0 Her Sun was conjunct Venus, \u201cthe Singer\u201d, in the 5th<\/sup> House of Creativity and Performance: that\u2019s more like the persona, what she projected.\u00a0 With Sun square Jupiter, she was \u201clarger than life\u201d.<\/p>\n

With the Moon sextile her North Node, she was \u201cborn to be in the public eye\u201d, and had a karmic mission to work with \u201cemotion\u201d, as in country music. Mercury squaring Chiron meant that she was a \u201cproblem solver\u201d, a huge achievement being her contribution to children\u2019s literacy.\u00a0 Mercury also exactly trine her Ascendant gave her a good nervous system.\u00a0 The position of Mercury at the beginning of her 5th<\/sup> House meant that she loved writing and was prolific in it.\u00a0 And crucially, Mercury conjunct Venus (although wide) in Capricorn in her 5th<\/sup> House of Creativity, gave her the \u201cSongwriter Archetype\u201d.\u00a0 She wrote more than 3000 songs in her lifetime.\u00a0 Venus opposite Saturn enabled her to write about heartache, romantic and otherwise.\u00a0 Moreover, Jupiter conjunct Chiron added the ability to heal through expressing wounds (catharsis).\u00a0 She spoke for many.<\/p>\n

Jupiter closely trine North Node, karmic mission assisted by godliness, she was very religious, but not necessarily in the conventional sense. Her grandfather was a Pentecostal preacher. She did however believe in living out her ideals.<\/p>\n

Uranus trine Neptune, Uranus sextile Pluto, and Neptune sextile Pluto represented harmony of the outer planets, almost a mini-Barbault Cradle.\u00a0 A solid basis for the psyche.\u00a0 Uranus at the top of the chart, exactly square the Ascendant, denoted a very individualistic career.<\/p>\n

Uranus positioned exactly conjunct the Midheaven, emphasizing even more the very individualistic career and persona.\u00a0 As Ben Beaumont-Thomas points out in the Guardian obituary \u201cThis was all done with considerable panache, rhinstoned glamour and towering hairdos\u201d.<\/p>\n

With the Ascendant square the Midheaven, there was a marked clash between her public and private life, she kept them separate, partly because her husband shied away from the limelight.<\/p>\n

Please note this is not an exhaustive look at her chart.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Life and Career<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

She was born in a cabin on the banks of Little Pigeon River in Tennessee.\u00a0 Fourth out of twelve siblings, she described her upbringing as \u201cdirt poor\u201d but also full of love, and there was always food on the table. \u00a0She was delivered by a missionary, paid with a sack of cornmeal. \u00a0Her father was a sharecropper and tobacco farmer.\u00a0 Her mother\u2019s was the musical influence, and an uncle encouraged her to perform.<\/p>\n

She wrote her first song at the age of six, played on a home made guitar at seven, and was given her first proper guitar at eight.\u00a0 She turned professional aged sixteen, and began her success as a songwriter.<\/p>\n

1967 was an important year for her, her age twenty-one.\u00a0 She was invited to appear with country musician Porter Wagoner on his regular television show.<\/p>\n

At the time, her progressed Sun was trine her natal Mars\/Saturn conjunction, and forming a Grand Trine with her natal Chiron in musical Libra in her 2nd<\/sup> House.<\/p>\n

This proved to be a good showcase for her talent.\u00a0 He gave her a five-year contract, during which time she became very popular.\u00a0 After seven years, without a pay rise, it felt like a prison for her burgeoning talent and ambition.<\/p>\n

Lesson: How best to free oneself from a karmic entanglement in the highest possible way? She eventually broke free by writing her most successful song of all time (on the same day as Jolene), a song which contained all the love in the world, no bitterness: \u201cI Will Always Love You\u201d.<\/em>\u00a0 She wrote it for Wagoner, as a goodbye song.\u00a0 Love overcomes all (karma).\u00a0 The song would prove to bring her unimaginable riches in the future, karmic reward.<\/p>\n

This story would bear a whole blog study on its own, but we do not have available the date she wrote the two songs, and other vital astrological data which would make it complete.<\/p>\n

Her career as singer-songwriter went from strength to strength.\u00a0 She also acted in various films, such as 9 to 5 and Steel Magnolias.\u00a0 Although she started out as a country singer, and always was, she diversified and entered the mainstream of the pop world.<\/p>\n

Songs<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

I will Always Love You (1974)<\/u><\/p>\n

“<\/u>\u2026<\/u>I hope life treats you kind
\nAnd I hope you have all you’ve dreamed of
\nAnd I wish you joy and happiness
\nBut above all this, I wish you love\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n

She wrote this song the same night as she wrote Jolene, and it was to be a watershed in her creative life.\u00a0 As written above, it expressed only love for the musical partner she had worked with for seven years, who maybe kept her hostage through his own insecurity.\u00a0 The song became the best-selling single by a woman, with an estimated 20 million sales, markedly as a result of the recording made by Whitney Houston for the film The Bodyguard.<\/p>\n

Another testament to her integrity, and also her shrewdness, was that Colonel Parker wanted to buy the publishing rights for Elvis Presley, who loved the song.\u00a0 She refused, and did not regret it.<\/p>\n

She told that the first time she heard Whitney\u2019s version she was driving along, and was so taken aback to hear what Whitney had done with it, that she had to pull over to the kerb.\u00a0 She admired Whitney\u2019s version.\u00a0 Many say that Whitney\u2019s version is better, but I like them both equally.<\/p>\n

The song does have an amusing memory for me (they say everyone remembers where they were when it was first played).\u00a0 It was released on 2nd<\/sup> September 1992.\u00a0 We had just moved\u00a0 into our present house, and the next door neighbour had it on loud replay until Christmas.\u00a0 She was very much in love.<\/p>\n

Dolly, with her characteristic wit, quipped that it earned her enough \u201cto buy Graceland\u201d.<\/p>\n

Islands in the Stream (1983)<\/u><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/u>Islands in the stream
\nThat is what we are<\/em><\/p>\n

No one in be-tween how can we be wrong
\nSail away with me to another world
\nAnd we re-ly on each other uh huh\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

This duet with Kenny Rogers, is my own personal favourite.\u00a0 It was written by the Bee Gees, and produced by Barry Gibb.<\/p>\n

The story goes that it was earmarked for Kenny Rogers, and he was attempting to do it justice in the recording studio, but he just couldn\u2019t get on with it.\u00a0 It was written to be sung as a solo.\u00a0 Dolly Parton happened to be down the road, and they decided to pull her in, to help.\u00a0 And the rest is history!<\/p>\n

I love their harmonies.\u00a0 The song went two times platinum in sales.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jolene (1973)<\/u><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/u>\u201c\u2026Your beauty is beyond compare
\nWith flaming locks of auburn hair
\nWith ivory skin and eyes of emerald green<\/em><\/p>\n

Your smile is like a breath of spring
\nYour voice is soft like summer rain
\nAnd I cannot compete with you, Jolene\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Jolene was written on the same night as \u201cI Will Always Love You\u201d.\u00a0 We do not know the date of that huge event, but it was recorded on 22nd<\/sup> May 1973.\u00a0 On that date, Jupiter was\u00a0 exactly trine Dolly\u2019s Midheaven (a blessing on her career).\u00a0 Her arguably two most popular songs written on one night, imagine that.\u00a0 Jolene topped the country chart in February 1974.<\/p>\n

Dolly was such a storyteller, and this story goes that Dolly had not long been married to Carl Dean, and a red-haired bank clerk had been flirting with him.<\/p>\n

Coat of Many Colours (1971)<\/u><\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026<\/u>Mama sewed the rags together
\nSewin’ every piece with love
\nShe made my coat of many colours
\nThat I was so proud of\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Often said to be Dolly\u2019s own favourite song, it was about the love with which her mother made her a coat from coloured scraps, when she was being bullied at school for her clothing, during the “dirt poor” childhood.\u00a0 Like all Dolly\u2019s songs, it was sung with pure heart.<\/p>\n

9 to 5 (1980)<\/u><\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026<\/u>Jump in the shower and the blood starts pumping
\nOut on the street, the traffic starts jumping
\nWith folks like me on the job from 9 to 5\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

One of Dolly Parton\u2019s most popular songs, it is indelibly linked in the mind\u2019s eye to her performance in the film of that name, for which it was written.\u00a0 She appeared in the film alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, and people knew her now as not just a singer-songwriter but an accomplished actor. The song reached number one on the country chart\u00a0 in February 1981.\u00a0 The words resonated for many.\u00a0 She spoke for the workers of the world.<\/p>\n

Carl Dean<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Carl was the love of her life.\u00a0 She met him the day after graduating from school, when she took herself off to Nashville to make her name.\u00a0 She met him outside a laundrette.\u00a0 If that is not fate, destiny and karma, I don\u2019t know what is.\u00a0 It sounds extraordinary, and it is, but I do have a close friend the same thing happened to: relocating from Scotland to London and meeting her life partner the very day she arrived.\u00a0 How these things are arranged, I do not know, it never fails to amaze me, but they happen.<\/p>\n

Carl\u2019s birthday was 20th<\/sup> July 1942, and the immediate thing that strikes you in their synastry is that their Suns are opposite each other, in the Cancer-Capricorn polarity, making them a complement to each other.\u00a0 Their chart interaspects are strong, and too long to enumerate here, but it is important to mention that they had a very strong karmic link: his Venus was conjunct her North Node (karmic love.<\/p>\n

They married on 30th<\/sup> May 1966, and were married until his death last year.\u00a0 At the time of their marriage, she had important and beneficial contacts to her Venus (Love): transiting Venus was sextile her natal North Node; and transiting Chiron and Saturn were sextile her natal Venus.<\/p>\n

As mentioned, and widely known, Carl shunned the limelight, and quietly got on with his own career running an asphalt road and driveway-paving business.\u00a0 Their marriage was notably strong, despite her frequent absence due to her very public career.\u00a0 An interesting romantic gesture was that he regularly wrote poems for her.<\/p>\n

Carl died on 3rd<\/sup> March 2025, and she put her career on hold to care for him, and she said recently she neglected her own health in that time.\u00a0 During that period, Pluto was transiting her natal Sun, the confrontational nature of which is undeniable.\u00a0 In his own chart, his death came as Neptune opposed its natal position in his chart, a time of spiritual balancing.<\/p>\n

Dolly collaborated with many artists, and loved many.\u00a0 There are some people I would like to highlight, for various reasons.<\/p>\n

Whitney Houston<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The song \u201cI Will Always Love You\u201d impacted both their lives, positively.\u00a0 That sounds like a divine set-up\u2026<\/p>\n

Whitney\u2019s Venus (her Singing) was exactly conjunct Dolly\u2019s Pluto (depth).\u00a0 The two brought something extraordinary out of each other, both in quality (of sound) and quantity (of money)!\u00a0 Whitney\u2019s Mars (energy) was also exactly conjunct Dolly\u2019s Neptune (sensitivity) in Libra (the sign of music).<\/p>\n

I would like to think that, once Dolly has got over her huge warm welcome on the other side, and settled into the heaven worlds, that she and Whitney will collaborate on the ultimate version of \u201cI will Always Love You\u201d!<\/p>\n

Miley Cyrus<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

By all accounts, the young singer Miley Cyrus was very close to Dolly Parton.\u00a0 Miley\u2019s father Billy Ray Cyrus was a support act at one time for Dolly, and Dolly became Miley\u2019s godmother.\u00a0 Dolly also played Miley\u2019s character\u2019s aunt in Hannah Montana.\u00a0 The two have performed together, and Dolly has mentored Miley in her career.\u00a0 It is my feeling that Miley and Billy Ray are part of Dolly\u2019s Soul Group.<\/p>\n

Billy Ray\u2019s synastry with Dolly Parton is exceptional, starting with his Sun conjunct her Moon (a close relationship), through exact opposite Venuses (complementary musical sensibilities), a karmic sextile of their North Nodes, opposite Moons (complementary emotional make-up), and other wonderful synastry notes.<\/p>\n

Miley herself had Sun sextile Dolly\u2019s Sun (a fundamental harmony of being), and a karmic healing interaspect of her North Node sextile Dolly\u2019s Chiron.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Kenny Rogers<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

It was amazing how Dolly somehow \u201cstumbled\u201d into rescuing and making Kenny\u2019s song \u201cIslands in the Stream\u201d, one of the most iconic duets of all time.\u00a0 They obviously had a special role in each other\u2019s destiny.\u00a0 I could watch and listen to that chemistry over and over.<\/p>\n

The karmic factor in their synastry is his North Node trine Dolly\u2019s Mars\/Saturn conjunction (her action promoting his destiny).\u00a0 Another important feature of their synastry was his Sun sextile her Jupiter in Libra (music), enabling each other\u2019s success.<\/p>\n

Books<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Dolly was a philanthropist in every sense of the word: it was etched in her philosophy and faith.<\/p>\n

Probably her most incredible contribution to the world was inspired by her father:<\/p>\n

\u201cMy father could not read or write, and I saw how crippling that could be.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

As long ago as 1995 she began a project named the Imagination Library.\u00a0 In this endeavour, she sent an age-appropriate book to every child in her country every month until they were five.<\/p>\n

This was expanded internationally in 2006, and is still running to this day.\u00a0 It provided millions of books for children.\u00a0 Her single act has been life-changing for many worldwide.\u00a0 It is one of the things for which the slogan \u201cBe More Dolly\u201d is oft-quoted.<\/p>\n

Health<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The reason that Dolly did not have children was that she was early on diagnosed with the painful condition endometriosis. She had a partial hysterectomy in her late 30s.\u00a0 This was possibly symbolized in her chart by Moon at 0 degrees Virgo in her 12th<\/sup> House.<\/p>\n

A departing transit on her passing this week was Saturn transiting the cusp of her 8th<\/sup> House of Transformation.\u00a0 She transformed the world this week, uniting the disunited states of America, and uniting the disunited world at war with itself.\u00a0 Dolly\u2019s message was to love one another.<\/p>\n

\u201cA world without Dolly doesn\u2019t feel possible, real, or right.\u00a0 But because of the eternally generous way she spent her time on this earth and the countless lives she changed for the better, her legacy will be an everlasting one.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone talks about a divided America, but her superpower was to bring people together.\u00a0 She transcended her role and became a universal figure, a bit like the queen, and similarly the reaction to her passing has been exceptional.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Aspects<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

There is not so much to report on the week\u2019s aspects, so its brevity will make up for Dolly\u2019s long blog.<\/p>\n

We start with a big Trine, that of Jupiter with Saturn.\u00a0 In the days before the outer planets were discovered, this would have been the biggest thing since sliced bread (if it had been invented).<\/p>\n

Jupiter trines Saturn in the late evening of tomorrow, Monday (31st<\/sup>).\u00a0 For me, in my experience and practice, it represents balance, and discerning decisions.\u00a0 The optimism of Jupiter is tempered by the realism and wisdom of Saturn.\u00a0 Sometimes you can feel torn by two ways of being, or of seeing things, but this aspect makes things easier to manage.\u00a0 It can enable balanced judgements and when in a duo, trio or quartet can enable the small group to achieve balance and realism.<\/p>\n

For the late great Astrologer Alan Oken in a birth chart it denoted:<\/p>\n

\u201cJUPITER trine Saturn EXPANSION FLOWS OR WORKS WELL WITH CONSOLIDATION.\u00a0 These aspects are most fortunate, as they contribute to common sense and a good sense of timing.\u00a0 Such people have an understanding of their limitations and the foresight to balance their efforts with the situation at hand.\u00a0 Religious aspiration can be balanced with practical application of philosophical principles.\u00a0 This aspect is frequently found in the horoscopes of individuals who are successful in the material sphere.\u00a0 \u2018The Banker\u2019 \u201c<\/em><\/p>\n

He may be identifying an Archetype here, the Inner Banker.\u00a0 Maybe you can find it in yourself, at this time, this Bank Holiday.<\/p>\n

We now come into September (already), and on Tuesday morning (1st<\/sup>) Saturn squares Mars, which is not a picnic. It is the most challenging aspect of the week.\u00a0 This may involve conflict, for example brinkmanship between two countries.\u00a0 I think of this aspect as a square peg in a round hole, and a square peg which\u00a0you shouldn\u2019t try to push through the round hole.\u00a0 Energies clash, and there may be an impasse of some sort.\u00a0 You may feel tired and a little discouraged, and unproductive.\u00a0 Ride it out gently.\u00a0 And observe others carefully, who may not be astrologically mindful.\u00a0 If you are hoping to make headway immediately after the Bank Holiday, you may need to exercise more patience for a little longer.<\/p>\n

At lunchtime on the same day, there may be some whole or part resolution with a positive sextile between Mercury and Mars, which can get things moving at least a little, though of the three planets involved that day Saturn usually has the last word.\u00a0 This second aspect of the day may bring about brisk action.\u00a0 But with Saturn still squaring Mars, you may still need to take a very measured and cautious step.\u00a0 You may however receive ideas to implement in the future, if not into your day.\u00a0 Your mental reactions may be heightened, and this can lead to enhanced productivity.<\/p>\n

Here endeth the aspects for the week, but I can offer you a Fixed Star for Wednesday (2nd<\/sup> September), that of Zosma.\u00a0 Zosma is the delta star in the constellation of Leo.<\/p>\n

Bernadett Brady lists it as \u201cpart of the triangle of victim, saviour or perpetrator\u201d.\u00a0 With the Sun in Virgo, these are very Virgoan positionalities. She reports that Robson equates it with an \u201calert mind\u201d, and Rigor adds \u201ca love of life\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cStarlight Elixirs\u201d by Michael Smulkis and Fred Rubenfeld provides the following information:<\/p>\n

\u201cThose who understand leadership and charisma may reach a point of deep introspection where they may be in a position of more fame than they wished, more exposure to the public eye than they felt was appropriate, or an awareness of themselves in a leadership capacity that brings them to a place where they must reconsider who they are.\u201d<\/p>\n

With Zosma\u2019s position in the constellation of Leo, leadership is highlighted.<\/p>\n

The information goes on to say, in words which Dolly Parton would approve, a further instruction for leadership:<\/p>\n

\u201cThey may be able to see more easily through other people\u2019s eyes, the true love and sense of caring by which they are actually able to funnel or channel other people\u2019s energies.\u201d<\/p>\n

This does not appear to be an easy star, but has some merits.<\/p>\n

The week in bullet points:<\/p>\n
