Aspects for the week beginning 14 December 2025
Sophie Kinsella and Joanna Trollope
Friends, and Sagittarian Storytellers
Sophie Kinsella (1969 – 2025)
“Every one of Sophie’s 40 million readers knew how funny and smart she was.”
~ Jenny Colgan
“Shopaholic” author Sophie Kinsella died this week of glioblastoma, at the tender age of 55. She will be missed by her many readers, and earned the title “the queen of romantic comedy”, given to her by Jo Jo Moyes.
Birth Chart
Sophie, whose birthday was 12th December, was born with the Sun in Sagittarius – confirming last week’s Storyteller Archetype for this sign. She died on 10th December, two days before her birthday. Friends found her joyful, a quality from her ruling planet Jupiter. Her Sun was unaspected (showing a free spirit) except for a square to the Nodal Axis (a strong sense of destiny). We have no birth time, but a noon chart reveals two exact Moon aspects, so even if she was born at the extremes of the day they may still be relevant:
Moon at Noon exactly square Saturn, some understanding of depressive moods
with
Moon at Noon exactly sextile Chiron, some understanding of how to heal
Mercury square Uranus and Chiron in a Cardinal T-square – and as Mercury rules shopping, this may have been the driving force behind the Shopaholic alter ego (or is it an Archetype??!). Mercury square Chiron can imply problem solving ability.
Sophie’s Venus in Sagittarius was closely sextile with her Uranus, indicating an ability to express the sensuality of life and shopping. Mars closely trine Jupiter described the feelgood and humorous vibe of her writing. Jupiter opposite Saturn can make decision-making difficult; but Neptune trine Chiron shows the healing nature of her work
Life and Career
Sophie was born in Roehampton, her real name being Madeleine Sophie Townley. She was educated at various schools, then at New College Oxford, where she took Music, then switched to Philosophy, Politics and Economics (Philosophy being a province of Sagittarius). She began her working life as a financial journalist, but found the job dull. She was inspired by the work of Joanna Trollope to try her hand at writing novels, at the age of 24. After several were published under the name Madeleine Wickham, she hit upon the idea of writing about a financial journalist with an addiction to shopping:
“I thought, wait a minute, shopping has become the national pastime, and nobody has written about it. It felt very much like an experimental project.”
Her work has been labelled “chick lit”, but she preferred the term “wit lit”. Her first two novels were made into a film “Confessions of a Shopaholic” in 2009. At the time, her transits included:
Pluto trine her Saturn (serious progress)
Jupiter sextile her Venus (success)
Jupiter trine her Uranus (sudden success)
North Node trine her Uranus (surprise karmic reward)
Her heroine, or alter ego, was called Becky Bloomwood, and the story takes in the inability to manage her own finances despite her expertise in the subject, an obsession with shopping, and a relationship with Luke.
Sophie’s books sold over 50 million copies, in more than 60 countries, translated into over 40 languages.
She met her husband Henry on her first day at Oxford University, and they had five children. He has helped manage her affairs, and looked after her with great care throughout her illness. She described him as an optimist, and said that during her illness:
“Every morning, he brings me a cup of tea. And he comes to me with a story of hope. I’ve already lasted more than the average. So, you know, that’s how we get through. … We just hope.”
I confess that I have not read any of her books (in my defence, I am not a shopaholic!). But she also wrote a book series for children, called “Mummy Fairy and Me”, which has a special place in my own granddaughter’s heart.
Joanna Trollope (1943 – 2025)
“It is a grave mistake to think there is more significance in great things than in little things”
~ Joanna Trollope
A friend of Sophie’s, Joanna’s birthday was 9th December, and she died this week on 11th December, two days after her birthday, and one day after Sophie passed. Joanna reached the ripe old age of 82.
Birth Chart
Joanna was also born with the Sun in Sagittarius, (the Storyteller Archetype again), and her work did contain humour, but also a much more dark side of the human experience (from Pluto exactly conjunct her North Node). She described her novels as “quite subversive, quite bleak”. With Mercury exactly sextile Venus – she had a marked Writer Archetype! Furthermore, Mercury trine Jupiter gave her a wide ranging mind. She had a very energetic chart, with emphatic Mars and Pluto aspects. Uranus was sextile her North Node, making her a trailblazer in her field: books set in rural England and focussing on domestic life and relationships. Her work too was labelled, in her case “Aga Sagas”, a label she disputed as agas were barely mentioned. She was quoted as saying in 2006:
“Except for thrillers there was nothing in the middle ground of the traditional novel, which is where I think I am.”
Life and Career
She was born in Minchinhampton, Gloucestershire, and was a distant relative of the author Anthony Trollope. She attended Reigate School for girls, and then, like Sophie, received a further education at Oxford University (at St. Hugh’s College), reading English. She worked initially as a civil servant, before beginning a writing career in 1980. She also originally wrote under a pseudonym. Her big breakthrough came with the novel “The Rector’s Wife” in 1991, which was an enormous and immediate hit, toppling Jeffrey Archer and Jilly Cooper off the top of the charts. Her Progressed Sun was trine her natal Uranus at the time (a sign of sudden success). Transiting Jupiter at the time was encouragingly sextile her natal Mars, and added fire came from a transit of Mars squaring her natal Jupiter.
In 1994, The Rector’s Wife was adapted for television, starring Lindsay Duncan and Ronald Pickup. I was always struck by the resemblance between Joanna Trollope and Lindsay Duncan, although the work is not deemed autobiographical.
Joanna married twice, had two daughters, two step-children, and was a grandmother.
She died peacefully at home, with Pluto square her natal Venus, Chiron sextile her natal Saturn, and Mars trine her natal Jupiter.
“She has a gift for putting her finger on the problem of the times”
~ Fay Weldon
Aspects
The first aspect today is Neptune squaring Mars. This could be quite tricky, or over-emotional. Mars likes to act unimpeded, but Neptune forces it to be more sensitive, and possibly also more spiritualized. Energies may be frittered, and water currents could be flowing in unhelpful directions, e.g. leaks. Generally under such an aspect, meditation can be helpful, and particularly those activities which combine physical movement with a stilling of the mind, such as Tai Chi. So perhaps a spot of those activities during the day could contribute to more harmony.
Later in the day, the Sun trines Chiron, introducing a healing note. For example, you may have a desire to heal a particular issue. Look for clues and insights today on this theme, which may help you. Healing is illuminated by clarity, and solutions may appear to conundrums which have been recently aired. There is a sense of wholeness about this aspect. Creativity and healing have a symbiotic relationship under this aspect.
Tomorrow (Monday 15th), Mars enters Capricorn. This may have the effect of slowing down action, but action taken will be firmed up, based on realism, more authoritative. You may need to make a more respectful approach to something or a project, give it more decorum.
We have a square between Saturn and the Sun on Wednesday (17th). This aspect needs some caution in the playing. It may bring disappointing or deflating news, delay or frustration. There is no shortage of such material on our news programmes, certainly. The Sun-Saturn square is an opportunity to think through what you are doing, and your strategies. If you are making economies, are they the right ones, based on your optimum values, for example?
A mellower aspect follows the next day, on Thursday (18th). Venus will trine Chiron, which may aid healing and recovery. Try to keep the heart open; it is the antidote for many things. The healing power of love comes to the fore. There may be a real opportunity to re-group your healing energies and feel harmony within your being.
Celia Fenn has a reminder for us for Friday (19th):
“The 19th of December will probably be a whammy. On this day the Earth transits the Galactic Centre at 27 degrees of Sagittarius AND experiences its closest transit to Interstellar object 3I Atlas just 2 days before Solstice. Very deep Galactic energies expected at that time.”
Then it’s on to a new beginning on Saturday (20th) with a New Moon at 28 degrees Sagittarius. Sagittarian New Moons are more upbeat than most, focussing on expansion, the planning of holidays, deep study and learning, global issues, and matters of faith. Re-play your affirmations, with more confidence. You can have powerful inner conversations under this New Moon.
The last aspect of the week, on the same day, is the Nodal Axis square to Mercury. Karmic information may come into your awareness, and communication in groups will be important. Past life exploration may beckon, for some! A good day for group reunions. As it is Mercury confronting karma, it may be a good day to tackle your Inner Shopaholic, the Christmas Inner Shopaholic being comparatively on steroids!
The week in bullet points:
- Today – sensitive energies; healing tones
- Tomorrow – responsible action
- Wednesday – frustration
- Thursday – healing and heart opening
- Friday – spiritual awareness
- Saturday – new beginning; karmic information

Dear Lana
Quite a coincidence to get your two Sagittarian writers passing on together within their own signs especially following your archetypes last week
Although I’ve heard of both I have never read Sopie Kinsella but I vaguely remmeber reading something by Joanna Trollope a long time ago. Neither wrote thetype of novels I read but it was fascinating to learn something about these two women
regarding aspects … not looking forward to frustration on Wednesday as I have so much to do! (Whats new?) but I’m looking forward to the new moon .
Now for my astra question of the week
How on earth (or in heaven?) can you ascribe something like shopping to Mercury?

Hi Lana
I’ve never read anything by either of these 2 authors, uneducated me, but I know a little more now I’ve read your blog. Thank you.
I have a little excitement surfacing about Christmas, first for several years. First I note a chance of healing and recovery on Thursday, wow if only but let’s hope.

Dear Janet
Thanks very much for your comment!
I haven’t trashed your duplicate, just in case wordpress thinks trashing is the default.
I do believe there is a karmic link between Sophie Kinsella and Joanna Trollope. Perhaps from the same soul group, or a family link from past lives.
An item on the radio this morning was highlighting “Storytelling”, so it’s trending…!
Mercury as shopping: it’s a transaction, sales. Geminis are the salespersons of the zodiac. Hope that makes sense,

Dear Sarah
Thanks very much for your comment!
I have occasionally read some chick lit (Marion Keyes; Jo Jo Moyes), but no Sophie Kinsella, as I am not a shopaholic. I took an interest in Joanna Trollope, but didn’t read The Vicar’s Wife.
Wishing you steady healing coming up to Christmas, and hope of a Christmas miracle.

Dear Lana,
Today’s match is part of the ATP Next Gen Finals, a special end of season tournament for the best players aged 21 and under. The format is different from regular ATP events, with shorter sets and faster momentum shifts, which makes it quite interesting from an astrological perspective.
The match is Nicolai Budkov Kjær vs Martin Landaluce.
Nicolai Budkov Kjær
Born September 1, 2006 in Oslo, Norway
Martin Landaluce
Born January 8, 2006 in Madrid, Spain
I would love to hear your prognosis for this match and how you see it unfolding.
Love,
Ladina

Dear Ladina
Goodness me! New players coming up all the time…
This match takes place at 17.10 Hours, so I will be brief.
Here goes:
Kjaer is super-Virgoan, with the Sun in Virgo exactly conjunct its ruling planet Mercury, and Mars in Virgo. Super attention to detail, perfectionism, and conscientious.
With Jupiter also exactly trine Uranus, he has the power of surprise.
His transits today:
Saturn opposite his natal Mars (frustration)
North Node trine his natal Jupiter (luck)
Born in the same year, they will understand each other on a fundamental, generational level.
Landaluce
Landaluce has the Sun, Venus and Mercury in Capricorn, so very ambitious and persevering. Saturn also trines his North Node, so he is deliberate and responsible, too.
His transits today:
Pluto on his Chiron (deep challenge)
Saturn square his Pluto (deep challenge)
North Node sextile his Mars (courage)
I think Kjaer has the better set of transits, but if Landaluce can overcome his challenges, his work will be memorable.

Dear Lana
Lovely to see some tennis back on the blog to edge out the reality TV !
I have no idea why my post arrived twice. At my end I was getting weird error messages and mercury wasnt even in retrograde.
Today is Wednesday and I am indeed starting to feel a little frustration. I worked solidly 7.20 am- 14,50 . I have to be out again tonight and I’ve just heard someone else is coming along who is rather bossy and keeps telling me things I already know and do. I’ll have to bite my lip but I am pretty sure she’ll want to be messing around with the sytem I use. Still I am able to work independently for much of the week so will just have to “suck it up” as they say
RE mercury and shopping – I may be a gemini but Im not a shopaholic either!
But thank you for explaining

Dear Lana,
Thank you so much for your prognosis. It was fascinating to read before the match.
Kjær won in four sets, and the final set went to a tiebreak. Landaluce was leading 4:1, but then lost seven points in a row, and Kjær took the tiebreak 8:4 to close out the match. It really felt like Kjær stayed calmer and more precise when it mattered most, which resonated strongly with what you had written.
I really enjoyed watching the match with your perspective in mind. Many thanks again.

Dear Lana,
Before today’s match I wanted to share one observation from yesterday. I was genuinely surprised to see Jódar defeat Tien, especially since Tien is positioned significantly higher in the ATP rankings. Rafael Jódar was born on September 17, 2006 in Madrid, Spain and his breakthrough performance yesterday showed a level of focus and resilience that was unexpected.
Today Budkov Kjaer faces him, and after yesterday’s unexpected win I am curious to hear your thoughts. Do you see indicators that Jódar’s breakthrough might continue, or do the transits suggest that Budkov Kjaer will be able to impose his rhythm and stability?
I would love to hear how you see the astrological dynamics unfolding in this matchup.
Love,
Ladina

Dear Janet
Thanks very much for your further comment.
It’s funny with tennis…only the other day someone asked me why, when I purport not to like sport, I take such an interest in tennis. I don’t know why, but I know I latched on it as a teenager in a non-sporty household, so have had a lifetime’s interest in this beautiful sport. In the 60s, Maria Bueno used to wear frilly outfits…!
We are struggling to find a shopaholic amongst us, but you have to admit you are an excellent saleswoman…

Dear Ladina
Thank you so much for your lovely explanation of how the astro-analysis enhances your viewing of tennis matches. Makes it all worthwhile.
I will be back to look at your new query, after a spot of lunch.

Dear Ladina
Hopefully I am in plenty of time ahead of today’s match!
Jodar was born only 16 days after Kjaer, so that’s three newcomers born from the same year, 2006, doing well this week.
Like Kjaer, Jodar is also Virgo Sun sign, with Venus also in that sign. He has extremely quick reflexes, with Mercury closely conjunct Mars in Libra. He may be quick-tempered. He has Pluto exactly square his Sun, so his feelings go deep. He may heal quickly after injuries, with Mars trine Chiron. He has the Entrepreneur Archetype like Kjaer (Uranus trine Jupiter) but not to the exact degree like Kjaer. He may be confused spiritually, with Jupiter closely square Neptune.
So for Jodar, his transits today:
He has Saturn on his North Node in Pisces (responsibility and serious intent)
The South Node is on his Venus (personal comfort zone)
The North Node is on his Uranus (karma bringing out his brilliance)
Their synastry:
Kjaer’ Venus trines Jodar’s Pluto (a deep personal connection, possibly)
Kjaer’s Mars conjuncts Jodar’s South Node (old adversaries, from past lives!)
Kjaer’s Pluto squares Jodar’s Sun (he constitutes a psychological challenge for Jodar, but one with which Jodar is familiar, as he has this exact in his natal chart, so can probably deal with it)
Kjaer’s Jupiter sextiles Jodar’s Venus (probably a good vibe off the court, socially)
Kjaer’s Chiron trines Jodar’s natal Mars (strengthening, for both)
Their Nodal Axes are exactly conjunct (a possible sign of a karmic link)
For Kjaer:
Saturn still opposite his natal Mars (frustration)
North Node still trine his natal Jupiter (luck)
Saturn on his North Node (responsibility and serious intent)
North Node on his Uranus (karma bringing out his brilliance)
Born close together they have some major transits in common. It could be a tight match. They may have a close karmic link. We could see them play a lot more together in the future. But Kjaer has that little extra of North Node trine his Jupiter, which may help him succeed on the day.

Hi Lana
I just wanted to say again how remarkable your hit rate has been in this tournament, it really is extremely high, and I appreciate your insights so much.
Today there are two semifinal matches in the Next Gen ATP Finals in Jeddah, and I was wondering if you might enjoy looking at these from an astrological perspective again:
First semifinal at 7 pm local time:
Alexander Blockx (born 8 April 2005 in Antwerp, Belgium; ATP ranking approximately 116)
vs
Nicolai Budkov Kjær (born 1 September 2006 in Oslo, Norway; ATP ranking approximately 133)
Second semifinal, not before 9 pm local time:
Learner Tien (born 2 December 2005 in Irvine, California, USA; ATP ranking approximately 28)
vs
Nishesh Basavareddy (born 2 May 2005 in Newport Beach, California, USA; ATP ranking approximately 166)
If you have the time and would enjoy offering your astrological take on these two matches, I would absolutely love to read your thoughts.
Thank you so much for your wonderful analyses so far.
Love,
Ladina

Dear Ladina
Thanks again for your appreciation.
You’ve caught me just before my meditation time, so I will take a brief look at the Kjaer match, then work on the later one afterwards.
Kjaer has today:
Saturn still opposite his natal Mars (frustration)
North Node still trine his natal Jupiter (luck)
Saturn still on his North Node (responsibility and serious intent)
North Node still on his Uranus (karma bringing out his brilliance)
This has seemed a winning combination for him so far!
Belgian Blockx seems almost an outright Aries, with Mercury, the Moon, the Sun, Venus and the North Node in that sign. This is a very physical and instinctive energy, contrasting with the more thoughtful and analytical style of Kjaer.
Today’s transits for Blockx:
He has Pluto sextile his natal Mercury (powerful)
Pluto conjunct his natal Chiron (challenging)
Blockx has a lot going for him, but I think Kjaer still has the edge.
I will be back later…

Dear Ladina
For the second match:
Learner Tien has the Sun, Moon and Pluto in Sagittarius, so has an expansive and confident energy. With Jupiter opposite Mars, he is super-enthusiastic, and with the North Node exactly trine the Sun, he’s a leader and very competitive.
His transits today show:
Jupiter opposite his natal Venus (upbeat)
Saturn trine his natal Mercury (deliberate action)
Neptune sextile his natal Chiron (spiritually tuned in)
His opponent Nishesh Basavareddy is very Taurean, with the Sun and Venus in that sign, so he may have good stamina. So again, these two players will have very different styles. I see that he plays right handed, with a two-handed backhand.
Their interaction is interesting: Nishesh has Jupiter on Learner’s South Node, a possible past life friendship. And Nishesh has Uranus square to Learner’s Sun, so can take him by surprise.
His transits today show:
Pluto on his Chiron (challenging)
Chiron square to his Saturn (challenging)
Venus on his Pluto (mildly comforting)
North Node sextile his Sun (some karmic benefit)
However, I think Tien looks stronger.
Best wishes for your viewing!
Love
Lana
